Affect & Conflict 1 Pleasure and Displeasure in Reaction to Conflicting Picture Pairs: Examining Appealingness and Appallingness Appraisals
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examined affective reactions to conflicting (i.e., appealing and appalling) pairs of emotional pictures. In Studies 1 and 2, participants rated the intensity of pleasure and displeasure. Conflicting picture pairs elicited reports of both pleasure and displeasure (i.e., mixed feelings). However, the appalling picture reduced the intensity of pleasure and the appealing picture reduced the intensity of displeasure. We propose the Distributed Attention Theory of Emotion (DATE) to explain these findings. DATE assumes that affective reactions to conflicting picture pairs depend on the distribution of attention to the pictures. When attention is allocated to both pictures, people experience mixed feelings but at reduced intensities. Study 3 provided support for DATE with behavioral and neuropsychological measures.

Appraisals and core affect are both considered central to the experience of emotion. In this study we examine the bidirectional relationships between these two components of emotional experience by examining how core affect changes following how people appraise events and how appraisals in turn change following how they feel in daily life. We offer the first empirical comparison of the pleasure in seeing (i.e., schadenfreude) and in causing (i.e., gloating) others' adversity. In Study 1, we asked participants to recall and report on an (individual or group) episode of pleasure that conformed to our formal definition of schadenfreude, gloating, pride, or joy, without reference to an emotion word. Schadenfreude and gloating were di...

We investigated the pleasurability of aggressive behavioral decisions. Four questionnaires (on hedonicity, decision making, justification of aggression, and impulsiveness) were given to 50 participants of both sexes, ranging from 16 to 80 years old. Most participants avoided unpleasant behaviors as part of a trend to maximize pleasure and to minimize displeasure. Mean hedonicity ratings followe...

متن کاملAnticipatory and consummatory pleasure and displeasure in major depressive disorder: An experience sampling study.
Pleasure and displeasure can be parsed into anticipatory and consummatory phases. However, research on pleasure and displeasure in major depressive disorder (MDD), a disorder characterized by anhedonia, has largely focused on deficits in the consummatory phase. Moreover, most studies in this area have been laboratory-based, raising the question of how component processes of pleasure and displea...
